General
IPEMA is a Permaculture Institute where buildings are built with recycled wood, clay, sand and local sustainable materials. We use a regional Brazilian technique called Pau a pique which combines bamboo, clay, sand and natural fibers. Our water comes from the river that runs in the property and it is used for cooking, drinking and bathing. We use 100% renewable energy (a water turbine generates our electricity). We use composting toilets and one toilet with biological filters and wetlands; we cook on a wood stove, which also heats up the water for the shower; we have zero emission of waste (everything that comes in the property stays in the property) and all waste water/gray water is treated and reused for food production. Our solid waste is sorted and separated for future use and we compost every organic matter including human waste.

The environment is familiar and we don't allow and discourage the use of any illegal drugs or alcohol because we have a family with children living in the property, so it's important to respect their privacy and way of living.

The Institute is located in the city of Ubatuba, state of São Paulo, in the Atlantic Rain Forest, with rivers and small waterfalls, lots of trees and thick vegetation. The climate is very rainy (3500 mm annually) and humid all year long, the temperature ranges from
11 °C (51.8 °F) to 32 °C (89.6 °F). The winter months are suppose to be the driest ones.

What to bring
Participants should bring clothing suitable to the program activities, such as farming and construction. We highly recommend long pants and sturdy boots for protection against the danger of encountering venomous snakes and spiders (jararacas and armadeiras respectively). It is the participants´ responsibility to bring other protection accessories like their own personal gloves and protective eye glasses. IPEMA will provide gloves only. The nearest hospital is 30 minutes away by car. The participants must sign a disclaimer acknowledging the risks of accidents and injuries related to the activities.

We have wireless internet available but no downloads are allowed. There is a Hotel 4 km (2.8 miles) away and an internet caffee in downtown Ubatuba where you can pay a fee for internet use. If you have a laptop and would like to bring it, you are welcome to do so.

It is recommended to bring notebooks to take notes. If you have a pen drive or a small hard drive we may be able to transfer some electronic data to you, so fell free to bring it.

Musical instruments and other instruments that allow participants to express their talents are welcome.
We recommend that you bring a very good insect repellent because they will bite you and say hello :-) You can also buy some at drugstores in downtown Ubatuba.

Remember to bring your digital camera, you will have a lot of opportunities to use it. If you have, you can also bring your snorkel and mask, we may have a chance to go swimming in nice areas for snorkeling.

Drugs and any other illegal substances prohibited by Brazilian law must be kept away from IPEMA.

Housing and accommodations
Housing for participants will be provided in a coed community home with 2 (two) single beds and 2 (two) bunker beds with bug nets. The students must bring their own bedding, including blankets and pillows if desired. Water for the shower is heated by a small firewood oven. And there is another hot shower available by the kitchen also heated by firewood. A composting toilet is used in the home.

Food
Our cuisine is largely vegetarian, we are not radicals but we choose not to buy any meat because beef production in Brazil is responsible for 60% of the deforestation in the Amazon and because of the toxicity of all types of meat, including chicken and fish, which we believe are harmful to our health.
The food is cooked in a wood stove and there is no refrigerator available, so no perishable and refrigerated food can come inside Ipema, except if used in the same day.

How to get to IPEMA
From São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro, the main cities near Ubatuba, take a bus to Ubatuba which is approximately R$48,00 (US$28.00). When you get there you can take a municipal bus, which costs only R$2,70 (US$1.80) to a bus stop in the highway 4 km away from Ipema and we will pick you up there or we can pick you up at the bus station, which is 50 km (32 miles away) for US$20 as long you set up with us in advance so we can schedule ourselves.

Certificate
A minimum of 80% (eighty percent) attendance in the proposed activities of the program is required from the participant, including the presentation of the final design (group and individual), otherwise the participant may not receive the certificate of completion.
